Robbie Wheeldon, 25, charged with murder after frontyard discovery in Pilliga, NSW

A 25-year-old man faced court charged with murder following an alleged domestic violence incident in New South Wales’ New England region.

Robbie Wheeldon, of Pilliga, briefly appeared before the Tamworth Local Court on Saturday morning where he was remanded into custody.

Police will allege he was arrested on Thursday after a 59-year-old man was found with critical injuries in the front yard of a Catherine St property.

Despite efforts from emergency services he died at the scene.

In a statement, NSW Police said officers were altered after a woman attended the Pilliga Police Station about 9.40pm, directing local police to the property just two streets behind the station.

Mr Wheeldon was arrested at the scene and charged the following afternoon with murder, assaulting police, resisting arrest and stalk or intimidate with the intention of causing fear.

The regional village of Pilliga, located about 260km west of Tamworth in the North West Plains, had a population of 175 people as of the 2021 census.

Catherine St sits on the northwestern outskirts of Pilliga, with only a few homes on large blocks accessible off a dirt track.

Mr Wheeldon will reappear in the same court next week.
