Sydney Traffic Controller shares her weekly income in viral TikTok

A female traffic controller has revealed the jaw-dropping amount she earns for a week’s work, describing it as a “sign” others needed to take up the profession.

Tahera Raedd, 19, works as a traffic controller in Sydney, directing cars through road closures affected by construction work.

The teenager recently revealed exactly how much she typically earns for a week’s work in a now viral TikTok video.

“Your sign to be a traffic controller,” she captioned the video, shared on April 21.

For a 12-hour shift that Monday, she earnt $520, Tahera claimed.

A 10-hour shift the following day earnt her $495, while a lengthy 13-hour stint the following day earned $600.

A four hour shift on the Thursday netted her $300 while a 20-minute job on Friday made $100.

In total she scored $2015 for her almost 40-hour working week.

While she said in the hashtags of the video her gig is “hard work”, Tahera appears to want to encourage others to take up the lucrative job.

“OK but like how do you get into traffic controlling?” one person asked.

“I just applied for traffic controller must be a good sign,” another said.

Another keen person wrote: “Gonna stop studying and work for this instead.”

Since being posted last month, her video has been viewed more than 359,000 times – but some have pointed out, it’s not clear if her pay packet was before or after tax.

Not all female lollipop ladies are thrilled by the work though, with Melbourne woman Maria Kefalas recently stating that the job is very “inconsistent”.

The 21-year-old who also earns around $2000 for a week’s work said the idea you’re going to be “rich” gives “false hope”.

“What people don’t tell you is you can work that whole week from Monday to Friday and get that much money [$3000] but then you could … have a whole month with no work,” she said in November.

She also said she was told if she wanted more work, she should get a rail ticket so she could also work along railway lines.

Ms Kefalas said the extra qualification cost $1000 to obtain and that there was no guarantee there’d even be shifts waiting for her.

She also said another con to the job was that she had to work in the rain, highlighting your shifts could also be rained off and you’d lose income.

While she made the video, she was huddling in her car on her lunch break as it stormed outside.

Her number one piece of advice was look into the role before applying.

And if you do end up getting a traffic controller job, make sure you’re with a union, she explained.
